Specsavers Victor Harbor Southern Surf Festival set to make waves this weekend

The annual Specsavers Southern Surf Festival returns to Middleton Point this weekend.The two-day festival held over Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2 is a true celebration of surfing in South Australia, and incorporates all aspects of the south coast’s unique and inclusive surf culture.

More than 100 competitors are set compete in a range of events including shortboard, longboard and kneeboard surfing, along with inter-club and fun twin-fin and single-fin events.
The Alexandrina Council is once again backing the festivities.

Last years event was cancelled due to COVID-19 and Surfing South Australia are really excited to be running the festival again .
Surfing South Australia spokesperson Craig Potgieter said
“We are stoked to present the third annual Southern Surf Festival and thank the Alexandrina Council for all their support as well as the local businesses that jumped on board as sponsors; particularly Specsavers Victor Harbor,” Mr Potgieter said.
“For the first time we will be running an adaptive surfing division which we are very excited about. The weather looks great and we ask people to come down and enjoy this celebration of surfing.”
The family friendly festival offers something for everyone.
For those wanting to give surfing a go for the first time, a range of surf schools will be operating on the Sunday and there will be live music by Jack Buchanan, kids entertainment, food trucks, coffee, wine, beer and much more on offer throughout the weekend.
The festival is being run under COVIDSafe restrictions and attendees will be required to check in and maintain social distancing.

Woolworths Junior State Titles presented by Globe, Round 2

Round 2 of the 2021 Woolworths Junior State Titles presented by GLOBE was run at Waits Point this weekend.

The Juniors were greeted by tricky 2-3 ft waves. The Groms had their work cut out for them trying to find corners and waves that would provide scoring opportunities. Fortunately the forecast strong onshore winds did not arrive and we were treated to a fine sound day with light winds.

Corey Taylor (Yorke’s) was the standout on the day dominating the Under 18 Boy’s division securing him the title for 2021. “ Waits is a challenging wave, really unpredictable and punchy, I enjoy surfing here and am stoked to take the U18 Boys Title”, said Corey after his event win. Stella Senior (Port Noarlunga) took the Under 18 Girls division with a strong display of surfing.

Other round winners included Poppy Sweetman (Middleton) and Leo Torok (Middleton) Under 16’s, Maia Taite (Seaford) and Noah Keelan (Middleton) Under 14’s.

The three round Junior Surfing Series caters for boys and girls with divisions for Under 14’s through to Under 18’s and forms the selection criteria for the state representatives for the 2021 Australian Junior Surfing Titles to take place at North Stradbroke Island later this year. The next round will be held on the Fleurieu Peninsula on the 27th of March, followed by the final round on the Yorke Peninsula, dates to be announced this week.

Fun 2-3 foot waves were on offer off the point providing the perfect setting for grommets from across the State, who converged in great numbers on the Fleurieu Peninsula for the first round of the series.

Imogen Elliot (Seaford) and Corey Taylor (Marion Bay) took the the Under 18 divisions today with impressive displays of surfing. The Under 16 Divisions went to Meg Day (Kadina) and Indi DeBono (Middleton). In the Under 14 Division it was King Cairns (Port Noarlunga) and Maia Tatie (Seaford) that dominated taking the first round of the series.

SA Champions Crowned at the Woolworth Surfer Grom Comp

Middleton, SA (Saturday, 14 November 2020): The SA, Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps presented by Pic’s Peanut Butter for 2020 was completed today in perfect 2-3 foot surf at Day Street, Middleton. Competitors and their families were treated to a hot 30 degree day and light winds.

King Cairns and Maia Taite took the coveted U14 Divisions winning trips to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, 2 days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC).

The Under 12 Girls and Under 10 Girls divisions were taken out by Isabel O’Boyle and Kiera Hunt respectively. The Under 12 Boys went to Noah Keelan with Connor O’Boyle taking the Under 10 Boys division and the Under 8 mixed division.

The Surfing SA Under 16 titles went to Zac Palmer (Boy’s) and Maia Taite (Girls).

Leo Torok and Maia Taite took the Woolworths Fresh Wave awards. Local surfer Leo was a standout all day and young Maia consistently scored in the excellent range in her heats. These surfers were rewarded for their outstanding performances and sportsmanship.

Kiera Hunt and Noah Keelan took out the PICS star performer awards.

Close to 60 competitors were in the event.

Regarded as one of the major steppingstones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, 2 days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective State.
