Chi’s turns it on for the 2020 Yorkes Classic

Published on 30/08/2020

The Iconic Chinaman’s Surf Break delivered pristine conditions and 4ft plus surf for the 37th annual Yorkes Classic Surf contest on the Yorke Peninsula. Surfers and spectators enjoyed the warmest day since early April packing out Chi’s beach for a perfect day of entertaining surfing.
In the stacked Open Men’s division the day belonged to Todd Goudie who was a standout throughout the day finding tube after tube dropping excellent 9 plus scores throughout his progression to the finals. One of South Australia’s finest and now a veteran of the sport Goudie’s performance showed how the heavy surf at Chis levels the playing field giving the older crew opportunity to take on the young guns. Local favourite and Chi master Luke Sykora placed second with Clayton Howse and Khai Adams finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.
The Open Women division was equally exciting with some great surfing on offer. Imogen Elliot showed her class snagging two solid waves and taking the win from Stella Senior in second followed by Maia Taite third and local charger Aurora Furbank in forth position.
Surfers in the Junior Division showed they could handle the challenging surf that Chi’s had to offer with the win going to Harry Green followed closely by local ripper Corey Taylor with King Cairns and Digby Tooze taking third and fourth positions respectively.
The “Spirt of Yorkes Award” in memory of Christine Cox went to Alby Clisby, a deserved recipient for his volunteering efforts and continual support for Surfing in South Australia.
The Christine Cox memorial trophy went to another Yorkes legend Adam Furbank for his great job of managing the 2019 Junior Surfing Team at home and away at the WA National Junior Titles.

Judges awards were presented to Max Longhurst for opening the day with two beautiful barrels, one which was ridiculously deep, and Aurora Furbank for charging one of the biggest waves of the day in the Women’s finals.

The Bootleg Boardriders awarded the Shaun Gray Memorial Yorkes Charger Award to local grom Corey Taylor for stepping up his game in the solid surf and performing strongly all day.
A big shout has to go to all the sponsors and the local community for all the work and effort put into this years event. “These events don’t happen without the generous support of local communities and a heap of effort from all the volunteers. The Yorkes community set the bar when it comes to running events, supporting junior surfing and welcoming everyone to their stunning region. The event and the awards handed out today reflect that’, said Craig Potgieter, Surfing SA
